What it's like
This part of town mixes old and new. Around 4th, 5th and K Streets, Mt Vernon Triangle is mostly newer glass and limestone buildings with shops at street level. A few blocks west are Victorian rowhouses and the cobblestones of Blagden Alley and Naylor Court, where old carriage houses now hold cafes, bars and murals. Mount Vernon Square, with the Carnegie Library, sits in the middle, and the 7th and 9th Street corridors have many of the restaurants.
Getting around
The Mt Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center station (Green/Yellow) is roughly a 7-minute walk away, and Shaw-Howard U (Green/Yellow) is about 15 minutes north on foot. Capital Bikeshare docks turn up every few blocks, and the flat grid makes walking the default. At rush hour, Farragut Square is about 15 minutes by Metro with a transfer to the Red Line at Gallery Place, and the Pentagon is roughly 15 to 20 minutes on a direct Yellow Line ride.
