What it's like
Capitol Hill is mostly brick and painted rowhouses with bay windows and small front gardens, on streets lined with old trees. Eastern Market, the red-brick hall from 1873, is the center of the neighborhood, and its outdoor stalls fill 7th Street on weekends. Barracks Row, along 8th Street SE, has most of the restaurants and bars, and Pennsylvania Avenue SE has bookstores and cafes. Lincoln Park is a few blocks east. Most errands are a short walk.
Getting around
Eastern Market station, about a five-minute walk away, and Capitol South both serve the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. A rush-hour ride to Farragut West, at Farragut Square, takes roughly 15 minutes with no transfer, and the Blue Line reaches the Pentagon in about 20 minutes. Capital Bikeshare docks sit near the Metro and along Pennsylvania Avenue SE, and the grid of flat, tree-lined blocks makes daily errands easy on foot.
